But here is the thing that should come before any purchase in this category, and almost nobody does it: test your water. You cannot choose a filter without knowing what you are filtering. A system that removes something not present in your supply is money spent on nothing — and a system that does not address what is present is worse than nothing, because it produces false confidence. Every community water system in the US is required to publish an annual water quality report, listing detected contaminants and their levels against regulatory limits. It is free, it is public, and your utility must provide it. Search your utility's name plus "consumer confidence report" or "water quality report". What it will not tell you. It reports water leaving the treatment plant and at monitoring points — not water arriving at your tap. The gap matters, because two of the biggest household risks are introduced after that point: Lead, which comes from lead service lines, lead solder in plumbing installed before 1986, and brass fixtures. Your utility's report cannot tell you what your own pipes contribute. If your home predates 1986, this is the contaminant to test for. EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Improvements require utilities to inventory and replace lead service lines, and many utilities now publish service line maps — check whether yours does. What reverse osmosis does, and its trade-offs

RO is genuinely thorough and it has three real trade-offs worth knowing before buying. How it works. Water is forced under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane that rejects dissolved solids. It removes a very wide range of contaminants — dissolved salts, lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, many PFAS compounds and much else — which carbon filtration alone does not. Trade-off one: waste water. RO produces a reject stream. In a drought-prone region this is a genuine consideration, and it is the criticism of RO with the most substance. Trade-off two: it removes minerals too. RO strips calcium and magnesium along with contaminants, which is why RO water tastes flat to some people. The honest version of this concern: you get very little of your mineral intake from waterdiet is overwhelmingly the source, and drinking demineralised water is not a health problem for anyone eating normally.
