Who Should Not Take Wegovy?
Important safety information about Wegovy contraindications. Who should avoid this medication and what are the risk factors?
By Med Consumer Watch Team
Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) is the FDA-approved weight loss version of the same medication in Ozempic. While highly effective, it's not safe for everyone. Understanding contraindications is essential for your safety.
Absolute Contraindications
Do NOT take Wegovy if you have:
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- Known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any component
- Are pregnant or planning pregnancy within 2 months
- Are breastfeeding
Wegovy carries a black box warning about thyroid C-cell tumors. This is the FDA's most serious warning.
Use with Caution
Discuss carefully with your provider if you have:
• History of pancreatitis
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Kidney disease
• Severe gastrointestinal disease
• History of depression or suicidal thoughts
• Gallbladder problems
Drug Interactions
Important interactions:
• Insulin and sulfonylureas may need dose reduction
• Oral contraceptives may be less effective
• Medications dependent on gastric emptying timing may be affected
Provide a complete medication list to your provider.
Age Considerations
Wegovy is approved for:
• Adults with BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with weight-related conditions
• Adolescents 12+ with obesity
Not approved for children under 12.
The Bottom Line
Wegovy has the same contraindications as Ozempic—primarily related to thyroid cancer risk, allergy, and pregnancy. Many other conditions require careful consideration rather than absolute prohibition. Always provide complete medical history to your healthcare provider.
