Truewerk Review: Never Wear Polyester Under Flame-Resistant Clothing

Truewerk sells technical workwear with pants from $79 to $149 and free shipping over $100. The fabric matters less than two rules: never wear meltable synthetics under FR, and know the signs of heat stroke.

The clothing is well regarded and the four-way-stretch, moisture-wicking approach is a genuine improvement on traditional cotton duck workwear — for comfort, for heat, and for freedom of movement. But workwear is safety equipment, and two things matter far more than fabric feel. The first is the rule almost nobody is told: do not wear polyester, nylon or other meltable synthetics underneath flame-resistant clothing. In a flash fire, synthetics melt and adhere to skin, and FR outerwear cannot prevent that. Cotton, wool or FR-rated base layers only. The second is heat. Heat kills outdoor workers every year, and the deaths are preventable. Moisture-wicking clothing helps genuinely — and no garment substitutes for water, rest and shade, or for knowing when someone has crossed from heat exhaustion into heat stroke. Heat - the part that actually kills people

Heat is the most under-respected hazard in outdoor work, and the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke is the difference between a break and an ambulance. Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, a fast weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, tiredness, dizziness, headache. The person is still oriented. Move them to a cool place, loosen clothing, apply cool wet cloths, give sips of water, and stay with them. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen, last more than an hour, or if the person is vomiting. Heat stroke — a medical emergency: a body temperature of 103°F or higher; hot, red skin that may be dry or damp; a fast strong pulse; headache; dizziness; nausea; and, critically, confusion, slurred speech, loss of coordination or loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately. Move the person into shade or air conditioning and start cooling right away — cool water immersion where possible, or cool wet cloths and fanning. Cooling first, transport second, is what the evidence supports. Do not give fluids to someone who is confused or unconscious. Confusion is the single most important sign. A worker who becomes irritable, disoriented or stops making sense in the heat is not being difficult — that is heat stroke until proven otherwise. Prevention, which is where clothing genuinely contributes: Water, rest and shade. Drink small amounts frequently rather than large amounts occasionally — roughly a cup every 15 to 20 minutes in heat. Do not wait until you are thirsty. Acclimatisation is the most under-appreciated factor. New workers and those returning after time away are at markedly higher risk in their first days. Most heat fatalities occur in the first week on the job. Build exposure gradually. Light-coloured, loose, breathable, moisture-wicking clothing — which is precisely what this category of workwear is designed to do, and a real advantage over heavy cotton canvas. Schedule heavy work for cooler parts of the day and take breaks in shade. Watch each other. The person with heat stroke is the least able to recognise it. Know the risk multipliers: high humidity, direct sun, heavy PPE that blocks evaporation, certain medications including some blood pressure drugs, diuretics and antihistamines, alcohol the night before, and existing heart or kidney conditions. On sun protection, since this is a distinct product category here. Outdoor workers have substantially elevated cumulative UV exposure and elevated skin cancer risk. UPF is the fabric equivalent of SPF. UPF 50 means roughly 1/50th of UV passes through — about 2%. UPF 30 or above is considered good; 50+ is excellent. A sun hoodie is genuinely effective sun protection and it does not wash off or need reapplying, which is why it outperforms sunscreen for all-day work. Cover what you can with fabric; sunscreen the rest. Ordinary light cotton offers far less protection than people assume, and less again when wet or stretched. Do not neglect ears, neck, lips and the backs of hands, which are the commonest sites of work-related skin cancers. Check your skin. New or changing moles, a sore that will not heal within a few weeks, or a rough scaly patch on sun-exposed skin all need a doctor.

FR and hi-vis - the standards that matter

If your work requires protective clothing, the standard on the label is the specification. Everything else is comfort. Flame-resistant clothing. Two different hazards, two different standards. NFPA 2112 covers flame-resistant garments for protection against flash fire — common in oil and gas and chemical work. NFPA 70E governs electrical safety in the workplace and drives arc-rated clothing requirements. Arc rating is expressed in calories per square centimetre — ATPV or EBT. Your required rating comes from an arc flash risk assessment for the specific task, not from a general preference. Check what your employer's assessment specifies. All arc-rated clothing is flame resistant; not all flame-resistant clothing is arc rated. This distinction catches people out. And the rule at the top of this review, which is the most important thing here: never wear meltable synthetics under FR. Polyester, nylon, acetate and polypropylene melt and adhere to skin in a fire, causing severe burns that the FR outer layer cannot prevent. Base layers must be cotton, wool, or specifically FR-rated. This includes underwear and socks. A great deal of ordinary athletic and moisture-wicking clothing is polyester — check the composition label rather than assuming. FR garments must be worn correctly to work: sleeves down, collar closed, fully fastened, and long enough that no skin or non-FR layer is exposed at the waist or wrists. Class 1 — minimum coverage, for low-risk environments well away from traffic. Class 2 — for workers near roadways with traffic generally under about 50 mph, or in complex backgrounds. Class 3 — the highest, for high-speed traffic environments and poor visibility, with sleeves included so the wearer's movement is visible. Class E — supplemental items such as trousers, which combine with Class 2 or 3 tops to make a Class 3 ensemble. Types R, O and P — roadway, off-road and public safety. Federal rules require high-visibility apparel for workers exposed to traffic on federal-aid highways, and many employers and jurisdictions require it more broadly. Check what your site requires. Hi-vis only works if it is clean and undamaged. Dirt, fading and worn retroreflective tape substantially reduce visibility, and a filthy vest is close to useless at night. Wash it and retire it when the reflective material dulls. A practical point on buying: a garment that is comfortable gets worn, and PPE that is not worn protects nobody. That is the honest argument for spending more on workwear — the technical fabrics here are more comfortable in heat than traditional canvas, and comfort drives compliance.
